Amla or amlaki or Indian Gooseberry is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C. The round green fruits from the amla tree are sour and astringent in taste. They are rich in anti-oxidants and hence are powerful anti-aging ingredients. The potent fruit finds its use in many ayurvedic medicines, notable among them being the chyavanprash. Not just this, amla oil promotes hair growth like no other oil does and has been used in India for ages to grow long dark hair. Aside from all these benefits, amla has another important benefit which is its ability to help you lose weight. If you are on the road to weight loss, then there are ways to do so effectively by including amla in your diet. Lets see how to use amla for weight loss.

How does Amla help weight loss?

The amla fruit is known to speed metabolism, especially that of proteins. One of the main reasons for obesity is poor metabolism. The moment your metabolism becomes better, you start burning more fat on a daily basis and your weight loss process gets accelerated.

Amla also helps in flushing out toxins that have accumulated in our body. These toxins can inhibit the functioning of the enzymes in the digestive system and can impede the process of digestion. By getting rid of these toxins, amla ensures that your food is digested well, that all the nutrients from the food are absorbed in the body and the waste is expelled.

Amla is also a good laxative. It helps relieve constipation, even the chronic kind. When your bowel movement eases up, your weight loss also becomes easy.

Amla Juice – Remove the pit from Amla, cut the fruit and whizz it in a blender and extract the juice from it. You can store this in a refrigerator and mix 1 part of the juice with 3 parts of water and have it every morning. The juice not just eases bowel movement, but also strengthens your immunity and keeps you active through the day. Drinking this the first thing in the morning flushes out all the toxins in your body and also gives you great skin. Make sure to drink it everyday for best results.

Amla Fruit – If you want to keep the fibers in the fruit intact, you can also eat a whole amla fruit first thing in the morning (if you can tolerate its sourness, that is)

Dried Amla – Amla is available in its dried form too. You can purchase the sun dried amla and pop some in your mouth when hunger strikes. Its a two edged sword- helps control the hunger pang and also promotes weight loss. Just make sure not to use the salted kind since you don’t want to cause any water retention in the body or the sweetened kind so that you prevent empty calories from being added.

The popular triphala medicine in Ayurveda is made from equal parts of amla, bibhitaki and the haritaki fruits. Consuming this medicine or churna as it is called is very effective in weight loss.

If you do not have access to the fresh fruit, you can buy unsweetened amla juice concentrate or amla powder which are widely available in supermarkets and include amla in your diet.
